Horn in Austria, close to the border with the Czech Republic. We visited on our way to Greece.

With its imposing buildings, city walls, museum, and castle it is a charming town to explore.

To quote Wikipedia,

Horn is a small town in the Waldviertel in Lower AustriaAustria, and the capital of the district of the same name.

Horn

I’ll admit that we didn’t set out with the intention of stopping at Horn as a must-see place. Indeed it was pure chance that it happened to be on our route and had a convenient Aire.

It would be easy to drive right on by on the bypass and miss the town entirely. But that would be a shame as it’s actually a lovely town to spend a little time exploring. It’s not a tourist destination in any way. Indeed it is a little difficult to find out much information about the town online.

The Town

The town center is quite large with a good selection of shops and services. Some of the buildings are absolutely lovely, including the St. Georg catholic church..

The local museum has exhibits exploring the history of the city and the agriculture of the region, and hosts one of the largest prehistory exhibitions in Lower Austria.

There is a signed walk around the old city walls, which makes for a very pleasant stroll. Much of the original stonework has fallen into disrepair or been incorporated into more modern buildings, but there are still sections of the original city walls.

Parking

There is a dedicated free motorhome parking area on Spitalgasse close to the Festgelande, or events venue. Parking and emptying are free. There is a small charge for water and electricity. There are a few marked parking spaces, but there is also plenty of space on the grassed area for many more vehicles.

Close to the town so access to the shops and restaurants is easy. There are also some pleasant walks along the nearby brook for those with pets.
