This is the third in a series of posts about our travels around Spain. The first two covered Errenteria to Torrevieja. With Blue skies, misty mornings, hard frosts, high mountains, and stunning places.

Next up we travelled from Los Alcazares to Cabo de Palos.

Winter sun, orange groves, blossom aplenty, hidden gems, steep gorges, and warm, sunny days.

This is the third in a series of four posts covering our time travelling around Spain in early 2022.

Warm, Sunny Days

It’s the beginning of February and 29°C, although the breeze kept it very, very pleasant.

How did we go so long?

Our first drink in a bar – at Archena – after a lovely walk along the river banks. Again, so quiet….where are the Spanish?

Blossom, Blossom Everywhere

We spent a day driving round small villages that were surrounded by almonds, cherries, nectarines, plums, and peaches. All of them blossom between the beginning of February and the end of March.

Apparently, it’s a thing to do with coach tours at this time of year – mostly during the first two weeks of March. Can see why – blossom everywhere – beautiful.

A Very Pleasant Surprise

Stayed in a stunning spot – Santuario Virgen de la Esperanza. We had no idea what was there – just thought it was a place where motorhomes were allowed to stay.

The buildings were built into the cliff face…absolutely beautiful. As we got there quite late we had a little wander but did more exploring the next morning.

What a little gem. Definitely a spot the Spanish come to at the weekends but we were the only ones there overnight.

Adopt A Cat?

Caravaca – a good place to acquire a cat apparently.

We went into the castle grounds separately as Zeus wasn’t allowed, and a cat latched onto Carol. It followed her even after she had taken Zeus back.

There was much ducking and diving to lose the cat. (…was a cute cat haha)

Healing Waters

Rio Mula y Pliego – one of the few tourist spots we went to – can imagine it’s packed in the Summer but it was quiet when we went.

Stopped in a free car park rather than the paid one nearer the pools so Zeus could have a longer walk. Glad we did as the paid car park was closed.

Lots of dogs in gardens on the way which Zeus handled remarkably well – only losing it once when a dog ran right up to him.

Stunning pools which are supposed to be good for healing – Zeus not happy as he wasn’t allowed in the water.

I'll Take The High Road

The next day was one of many dirt track/off-roading days – poor Lottie.

She coped admirably and we saw many sights off the tourist trail where the locals go. Some were closed, some heavily graffitied but all charming.

A Woodland Walk

Andrew found a 1km woodland walk which we thought would be a nice bimble for Zeus.

What we didn’t realize was it was nearly 4km to the walk – which was actually 1.4km.

It was a pleasant walk though with informative boards showing the local wildlife. All were in Spanish so indicating that the walk was aimed at the locals rather than tourists. It was easy, however, to work out what the animals were from the pictures.

Hidden Pools

One of the dirt tracks led to a hidden pool. When we got there we were initially disappointed as no water.

We decided to climb over the boulders in the river bed to see what was round the corner – a stunning pool – well worth the dirt tracks and scary drops.

Satnav Woes

Google maps and our motorhome sat nav let us down – taking us right – about 36km around a mountain instead of going the other way (less than 9km)

Another Hidden Gem

After our stop last night we noticed that we had a puncture – maybe all those dirt tracks?

Once sorted we went for a stroll around – Estrecho de la Arbeloja. Stunning – we are getting quite good at finding these places.

I will cover punctures/replacement tyres/No English-speaking mechanics in more detail in another post,

10 Municipalities

City Life

Stopped in our first crowded motorhome stop by Ikea in Murcia – 92 stacked in the main area and 10 in another car park next door!

Very noisy too but not too far to get the tyres sorted.

Cabo de Palos

Faro Cabo de Palos is definitely worth a visit. A pleasant stroll along the cliff path and through the town.

Again very quiet with a few Spanish eating in restaurants along the harbourside.

As before, There is so much more we saw and did that I haven’t included here – you’ll just have to go see it for yourself!

Next post Las Orres de Cotillas to La Palma del Candade including Gibraltar

I haven’t gone into great detail about anything in particular in this post, so if you would like me to expand on anything please leave a comment and I will endeavor to write another separate post on the topic.

Happy Motorhoming.

Hope You Enjoy!
